Introduction to Ergodic Theory and Additive Combinatorics

Month: August 2008

Date: August 25--29

Name: Introduction to Ergodic Theory and Additive Combinatorics

Location: Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley, California.

Description

The theme of this workshop is the interplay between recurrence in ergodic theory and additive combinatorics. In addition to the now classical results on the existence of arithmetic progressions in large sets, we focus on the parallels among the ergodic theoretical, harmonic analytical and combinatorial methods. During the workshop, we plan several minicourses, including the following topics: recurrence in ergodic theory, correspondence principle, nilsystems in ergodic theory, and existence of arithmetic progressions in primes.

Speakers and topics for minicourses

H. Furstenberg: Recurrence in Ergodic Theory; B. Green: Progressions in Primes; B. Host: Dynamical Systems on Nilmanifolds; T. Tao: Correspondence Principle and Finitary Ergodic Theory.

Organizers

Ben Green, Bryna Kra, Emmanuel Lesigne, Anthony Quas, Mate Wierdl.
