  • Ongoing. SIAM Undergraduate Research Online (SIURO) is a web-based publication devoted to undergraduate research in applied and computational mathematics. Topics include analysis, discrete mathematics, statistics, operations research, optimization, dynamical systems, modeling, and computation. Papers written by undergraduate students (or teams of students) are being accepted on an ongoing basis and will be posted online as they are accepted. The SIURO web site lists the editorial board and has instructions for authors, review policies, etc.

  • 11/15/08: MATH AND SCIENCE TEACHER TRAINING - CALL FOR APPLICATIONS. Last year, more than 100,000 students in Florida and Mississippi began the school year without a qualified teacher. The ABCTE Teach & Inspire scholarship program is accepting applications for the 2009 Teach & Inspire cohort. The program works with high-need school districts in Florida and Mississippi to certify new teachers. This opportunity includes a US$650 scholarship towards earning your certification; a $1000 stipend after you have secured a teaching position; and ongoing professional support and training while you teach.
  • 12/9/08: NSF EAST ASIA AND PACIFIC SUMMER INSTITUTES
    Fellows in the National Science Foundation's (NSF) 2009 East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students program are supported in eight-week research experiences (from June to August) at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan (10 weeks), Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan. The program provides a US$5,000 summer stipend, a round-trip air ticket to the host location, living expenses abroad, and an introduction to the society, culture, language, and research environment of the host location. Applicants must be enrolled in a research-oriented Master’s or Ph.D. program, and must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents by the application deadline date.
  • 1/10/09: AAUW EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIPS AND GRANTS. The American Association of University Women (AAUW) awards Selected Professions Fellowships to women who intend to pursue a full-time course of study at accredited institutions during the fellowship year in a designated degree program in which women’s participation has traditionally been low. All women who are candidates for the master of science (M.S.) degree in mathematics or statistics are eligible to apply. Applications are now available for Master’s and First Professional Awards, which carry cash awards of between US$5,000 and US$12,000.
  • 1/15/09: AMS-AAAS MASS MEDIA FELLOWSHIPS--CALL FOR APPLICATIONS. In affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the AMS sponsors ten-week fellowships for graduate students in mathematics to work full-time over the summer as reporters, researchers and production assistants in U.S. mass media organizations--radio and TV stations, newspapers and magazines. The program is intended to strengthen the connections between science and the media, to improve public understanding of science, and to sharpen the ability of the fellows to communicate complex scientific issues to non-specialists. Graduate students in mathematics at U.S. institutions with outstanding written and oral communication skills and a strong interest in learning how the media works. Applicants should be available for a telephone interview in March and be able to accept assignments anywhere in the U.S. Fellows are provided a weekly stipend for ten weeks, as well as travel expenses to and from AAAS in Washington, DC and their sites.
  • 1/16/09: ISM DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. Doctoral fellowships at the Institut des sciences mathematiques (ISM) provide financial support to pursue a doctoral program at one of the ISM member universities (Concordia University, Laval University, McGill University, University of Montreal, UQAM, and University of Sherbrooke).
  • 2/13/09: MfA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. The Math for America Foundation (MfA) sponsors the MfA Fellowship Program, which trains mathematically talented individuals to become high school mathematics teachers in New York City, Los Angeles, or San Diego. The fellowship provides an aggregate stipend of up to US$100,000 over five years, a full-tuition scholarship for a master’s-level teaching program at one of MfA’s partner universities, and ongoing support mechanisms, including mentoring and professional development. Candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree with substantial coursework in mathematics and should be able to demonstrate a strong interest in teaching. Applicants must be willing to commit to a five-year fellowship term in the chosen city.The deadline for applications for New York City and Los Angeles is FEBRUARY 13, 2009; the deadline for applications for San Diego is JUNE 1, 2009.
  • 2/19/09: CARLETON SUMMER MATHEMATICS PROGRAM FOR WOMEN. This is a month-long program (June 21-July 19) for mathematically talented first- and second-year undergraduate women, featuring two demanding, intense courses under the supervision of female faculty, as well as a variety of mathematical events.   • 2/27/09: AWM ESSAY CONTEST.
  • Enter the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) annual essay contest for biographies of contemporary women mathematicians and statisticians in academic, industrial, and government careers. The essays are based primarily on interviews with women who are currently working in mathematical sciences careers. The contest is open to 9th–12th grade and and college undergraduate students. The tentative deadline for entries is February 27, 2009.
  • 3/2/09: EDGE SUMMER PROGRAM. The Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education (EDGE) Program is a postbaccalaureate summer enrichment program designed to strengthen the ability of women and minority students to successfully complete graduate programs in the mathematical sciences. The summer program consists of two core courses in analysis and algebra/linear algebra. There will also be minicourses in vital areas of mathematical research in pure and applied mathematics, short-term visitors from academia and industry, guest lectures, graduate student mentors, and problem sessions. In addition, a follow-up mentoring program and support network will be established with the participants’ respective graduate programs. EDGE 2009 will be held at Spelman College. Applicants to the program should be women who are (1) graduating seniors who have applied to graduate programs in the mathematical sciences, (2) recent recipients of undergraduate degrees who are now entering graduate programs, or (3) first-year graduate students.   • 3/31/09: PLUS MAGAZINE'S 2009 NEW WRITERS AWARD. Plus is launching its annual writing competition for science writers of any age and from any background who can explain a mathematical topic or application they think the world needs to know about. There are three categories: secondary school students, university students, and general public. The winning entries will be read by an international audience of over 100,000 in the June 2009 issue of Plus, and winners will receive an iPod, subscription to the journal Nature, and signed copies of popular math books by some of the best science writers today.   • UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS, INTERNSHIPS AND FELLOWSHIPS SACNAS. The Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science) posts in SACNAS e-nouncements undergraduate and graduate student scholarships, internships and fellowships with various deadlines.
  • SIAM STUDENTS TRAVEL GRANTS. The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) provides travel grants of US$500 to support student travel to 2008 SIAM Conferences and Annual Meeting. Top priority will be given to students who are presenting papers at the conference or meeting, with second priority to students who are co-authors of papers to be presented at the meeting. Complete applications must be received at the SIAM office no later than two months before the first day of the meeting for which support is requested.   • FOR POSTDOCS:

  • 12/12/08: PIMS POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS. The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) invites nominations of outstanding young researchers in the mathematical sciences for Postdoctoral Fellowships for the year 2009–2010. Candidates must be nominated by one or more scientists or departments affiliated with PIMS, or by a department (or departments) affiliated with PIMS. For the 2008–2009 competition, the amount of the award is CA$20,000 and the sponsor(s) is (are) required to provide additional funds to finance a minimum stipend of CA$40,000 (plus benefits). Nominees must have a Ph.D. or equivalent (or expect to receive a Ph.D. by December 31, 2009) and be within three years of their Ph.D. at the time of the nomination (i.e., the candidate must have received her or his Ph.D. on or after January 1, 2006). the deadline for nominations is .   • 2/1/08: NRC RESEARCH ASSOCIATESHIP PROGRAMS. The National Research Council of the National Academies sponsors a number of awards for post-doctoral and senior researchers at federal laboratories. There are four review cycles annually. The next submission deadline after February is AUGUST 1, 2009, then NOVEMBER 1, 2009. The website has detailed program information.
  • 2/1/08: NSF-AWM TRAVEL GRANTS. The NSF-AWM Travel Grants program enables women to attend research conferences in their fields, thereby providing a valuable opportunity to advance their research activities and their visibility in the research community. The grants provide full or partial support for travel and subsistence for a meeting or conference in the applicant's field of specialization. A maximum of US$1,500 for domestic travel and US$2,000 for foreign travel will be available. Women must hold a doctorate (or equivalent experience) and have a work address in the US (or US home address, in case of unemployed mathematicians). There are three award periods per year, with upcoming applications due FEBRUARY 1, 2009, and MAY 1 2009 .
