Document Viewers

Services on the AMS website may offer documents that are viewable in formats other than html. The formats used are: PDF (Portable Document Format), PostScript, and DVI (DeVice Independent). Each format needs viewer software. Available either from the public domain or a commercial site, a viewer application must be installed on your local system. Installed as a helper application in your browser, the viewer software will launch and translate files when items are retrieved.

The AMS website services that use one or more of these formats are:

  • Notices of the AMS - Notices articles are in PDF and PostScript formats.
  • AMS electronic primary journals - Full text of articles may be viewed in PostScript, PDF, and DVI formats.
  • Contemporary Mathematics Volumes 218 and 238 - Full text of articles may be viewed in PostScript and PDF formats.
  • AMS Bookstore - Samples of selected items are available in PDF and PostScript formats.
  • MathSciNet - Reviews are available in PDF, PostScript, and DVI formats.

PDF

PDF files are viewed with Adobe's Acrobat Reader(r). You can download Adobe Acrobat Reader(r) for many different platforms for free. In addition, Adobe provides installation instructions, technical notes, and customer support for each of the Acrobat platforms offered.

PostScript

Aladdin's Ghostscript (r) is a PostScript interpreter available for Windows, Macintosh, and Unix. Follow the instructions in the Ghostscript manual provided for each of the following platforms:

Only the Windows version of Ghostscript supports printing.

DVI

The AMS has evaluated a number of public domain DVI viewers and found that many are difficult to install or the links to the software are unstable. XDVI, a public domain viewer for UNIX, is recommended. The public domain archive for DVI viewers and related TeX sources is CTAN. The TeX Catalogue Online, Home Edition lists many TeX, LaTeX, and related packages and tools.
